Let’s be honest—how often do you find yourself getting on Netflix “just to watch a single episode”… but before you know it, it’s 3:00 AM?That’s me as well! But check this out: while everybody thinks of Netflix as a streaming service, did you know that the original Netflix business was based on mailing DVD’s to customers?

That’s pretty unbelievable! So what was the transition like going from shipping DVD’s to being the biggest player in the streaming market?I’d like to elaborate…

It Started With a Simple (But Smart) Idea

A long time ago, when you rented a movie, you usually did it from a local video store that had a large selection of movies. You had to return the movies on time (or pay late fees), and you were lucky if the movie you wanted was in-stock.

Then came Netflix. They changed the game by allowing you to rent DVDs through the mail (without late fees). It was easy, convenient, and very innovative!

However, there is more: Netflix understood where things were heading.

They Pivoted Before It Was Cool

When most people were still busy with DVDs, Netflix decided to take the plunge and offer streaming services.

Honestly, this was a very bold move.

At that time, there were very few people that had good internet connections, so the timing was not ideal; however, Netflix refused to wait for everything to be perfect. They were building for a future.

And, once streaming exploded, they had already positioned themselves to be in the lead. A winner does not wait to see a trend; they recognize it first.

Personalization Is Their Secret Weapon

Have you seen how Netflix will always suggest something? That’s not just because they randomly predict what people are going to like. They actually look into your data – your viewing history, what you skip or re-watch and the kinds of things you enjoy – to determine the best recommendations for you.

When you get that “this app knows me better than I know myself” feeling, it’s pretty much true. The personalization of what is being offered to individual users has contributed enormously to Netflix’s continued success as a streaming service.

In short? It works!

Original Content Changed Everything

When Netflix started, they offered only others’ content for streaming. However, Netflix made a big move and started making original content.

They created TV shows, movies and documentaries under the Netflix brand. Now they control the content – there is no reliance on third parties (movie studios) to be able to provide those materials – and they won’t have risk of losing materials.

Some of their originals become hits on a global scale. It is incredible how they’ve leveraged their content to create a competitive advantage!

Global Expansion = Massive Growth

Netflix expanded outside their home country to offer their services worldwide.

They did this by creating content that was available in a range of languages, produced content specifically for each region and by providing customers with stories from the area in which they live.

This has enabled Netflix to connect with customers around the world.

They are everywhere simply because they expanded but they also localized their expansion.

Constant Innovation Keeps Them Ahead

Netflix has always maintained an adaptive approach to business. They’re continually experimenting with features and finding ways to better serve users.

Some changes may not work, however, they continue to try new things and see what works best. In a constantly changing market, if you remain stagnant in your business, there is a chance you won’t succeed.

What You Can Learn From Netflix

You don’t need to run a streaming platform to apply these lessons.

Here’s what actually matters:

  • Adapt early
  • Focus on user experience
  • Use data smartly
  • Innovate constantly
  • Think globally

These aren’t just business strategies—they’re growth principles.

Final Thoughts: Stay Ahead or Get Left Behind

Netflix didn’t achieve success merely by chance; it achieved success because Netflix adapted quickly, understood users better than others, and took calculated risks.

That’s really the key to success in any industry. If you want to build a successful brand or business and/or make progress on your plan, keep this in mind:

Do not wait for change. Act before changes are made. Those who adapt the fastest in the new world will be the ones who take control of their own businesses.
